A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenJPEG (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function j2k_read_ppm_v3. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Double free vulnerability in the j2k_read_ppm_v3 function in OpenJPEG before r2997, as used in PDFium in Google Chrome, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (process crash) via a crafted PDF.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2014. The weakness was presented 10/18/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.chromium.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1239 since 01/21/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version r2997 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
