Red Hat Linux 6 Device Mapper Snapshot Data information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Linux 6 and classified as problematic. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Device Mapper. Executing a manipulation as part of Snapshot Data can lead to information disclosure. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2013-4299. No exploit is available. Applying a patch is advised to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Linux 6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Device Mapper. The manipulation as part of a Snapshot Data leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Interpretation conflict in drivers/md/dm-snap-persistent.c in the Linux kernel through 3.11.6 allows remote authenticated users to obtain sensitive information or modify data via a crafted mapping to a snapshot block device.

The weakness was published 10/16/2013 with Fujitsu as RHSA-2013:1436 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rhn.redhat.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4299 since 06/12/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:

An information leak flaw was found in the way Linux kernel's device mapper subsystem, under certain conditions, interpreted data written to snapshot block devices. An attacker could use this flaw to read data from disk blocks in free space, which are normally inaccessible.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71206 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-quantal vulnerabilities (USN-2040-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0652-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71206), SecurityFocus (BID 63183†), OSVDB (98634†), Secunia (SA55343†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42009†). Similar entries are available at VDB-12213, VDB-13142, VDB-67533 and VDB-67534. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
