Linux Kernel up to 3.13.9 Netlink Socket access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.13.9. This affects an unknown function of the component Netlink Socket Handler. Such manipulation leads to access control. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0181. No exploit exists. It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 3.13.9 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Netlink Socket Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

The Netlink implementation in the Linux kernel through 3.14.1 does not provide a mechanism for authorizing socket operations based on the opener of a socket, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions and modify network configurations by using a Netlink socket for the (1) stdout or (2) stderr of a setuid program.

The weakness was disclosed 04/22/2014 by Andy Lutomirski as CVE-2014-0181: Linux network reconfiguration due to incorrect netlink checks as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-0181 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73957 (Fedora 20 : kernel-3.14.3-200.fc20 (2014-6122)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2015:0652-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92890), Tenable (73957), SecurityFocus (BID 67034†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44353†). marc.info is providing further details. The entries VDB-10840, VDB-12213, VDB-67533 and VDB-67534 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
