Insufficient validation of untrusted input in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 59.0.3071.86 for Linux, Windows and Mac, and 59.0.3071.92 for Android allowed a remote attacker to perform an out of bounds memory read via a crafted HTML page.
The bug was discovered 06/05/2017. The weakness was published 10/27/2017 by Andrey Kovalev with Qihoo 360 Vulcan Team (Website). The advisory is shared at security.gentoo.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-5071 since 01/02/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 37 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101583 (Fedora 26 : qt5-qtwebengine (2017-1e34da27f3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
