A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.29 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file dwarf2.c of the component Incomplete Fix. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. dwarf2.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.29, mishandles NULL files in a .debug_line file table, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via a crafted ELF file, related to concat_filename. NOTE: this issue is caused by an incomplete fix for CVE-2017-15023.
The bug was discovered 10/27/2017. The weakness was published 10/27/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at blogs.gentoo.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-15939 since 10/27/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
