Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.29 (Programming Tool Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the file elfcomm.c of the component readelf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
elfcomm.c in readelf in GNU Binutils 2.29 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (excessive memory allocation) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted ELF file that triggers a "buffer overflow on fuzzed archive header," related to an uninitialized variable, an improper conditional jump, and the get_archive_member_name, process_archive_index_and_symbols, and setup_archive functions.
The bug was discovered 10/29/2017. The weakness was presented 10/29/2017 as Bug 22361 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at sourceware.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-15996 since 10/29/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
