Details
A vulnerability was found in WebKit and WebkitGTK+ up to 2.16.2 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component UNIX IPC Layer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The UNIX IPC layer in WebKit, including WebKitGTK+ prior to 2.16.3, does not properly validate message size metadata, allowing a compromised secondary process to trigger an integer overflow and subsequent buffer overflow in the UI process. This vulnerability does not affect Apple products.
The bug was discovered 05/19/2017. The weakness was presented 11/01/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at trac.webkit.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-1000121 since 11/01/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 166 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104928 (EulerOS 2.0 SP2 : webkitgtk3 (EulerOS-SA-2017-1310)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.16.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
