Details
A vulnerability was found in Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (Wireless LAN Software) (unknown version). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code block of the component 802.11v. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
A vulnerability in the implementation of 802.11v Basic Service Set (BSS) Transition Management functionality in Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers could allow an unauthenticated, adjacent attacker to cause an affected device to reload unexpectedly, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation of 802.11v BSS Transition Management Response packets that an affected device receives from wireless clients. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a malformed 802.11v BSS Transition Management Response packet to an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected device to reload unexpectedly, resulting in a DoS condition. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCvb57803.
The bug was discovered 11/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 11/02/2017 as cisco-sa-20171101-wlc2 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-12275 since 08/03/2017. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104460 (Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316167 (Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Transition Management Denial of Service Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20171101-wlc2)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104460) and SecurityFocus (BID 101657†). The entries VDB-108900 and VDB-108904 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
