Linux Kernel up to 4.13.9 config.c usb_get_bos_descriptor Config out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The usb_get_bos_descriptor function in drivers/usb/core/config.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13.10 allows local users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted system calls.

The bug was discovered 10/18/2017. The weakness was presented 11/04/2017 by Andrey Konovalov (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-16535 since 11/03/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104716 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : linux, linux-aws, linux-gke, linux-kvm, linux-raspi2, linux-snapdragon vulnerabilities (USN-3485-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351447 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-013).

Upgrading to version 4.13.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104716) and SecurityFocus (BID 102022†). See VDB-102802, VDB-103034, VDB-104449 and VDB-104864 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
