Details
A vulnerability was found in rsync 3.1.2/3.1.3-development (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function receive_xattr of the file xattrs.c. The manipulation with the input value \0 leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The receive_xattr function in xattrs.c in rsync 3.1.2 and 3.1.3-development does not check for a trailing '\0' character in an xattr name, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by sending crafted data to the daemon.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2017. The weakness was published 11/06/2017 as Bug 13112 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.samba.org.
