Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.8 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Ruby. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The OpenSSL::SSL.verify_certificate_identity function in lib/openssl/ssl.rb in Ruby 1.8 before 1.8.7-p374, 1.9 before 1.9.3-p448, and 2.0 before 2.0.0-p247 does not properly handle a \0 character in a domain name in the Subject Alternative Name field of an X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, a related issue to CVE-2009-2408.
The weakness was published 10/22/2013 by B.J. as APPLE-SA-2013-10-22-3 as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Mailinglist). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:
A hostname validation issue existed in Ruby's handling of SSL certificates. This issue was addressed by updating Ruby to version 2.0.0p247.This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4073 since 06/09/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
