A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils 2.29.1 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file coffgen.c of the component libbfd. The manipulation as part of a File Descriptor leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. coffgen.c in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.29.1, does not validate the symbol count, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (integer overflow and application crash, or excessive memory allocation) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted PE file.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2017. The weakness was presented 11/15/2017 as Bug 22385 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at sourceware.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-16831 since 11/15/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
