Linux Kernel up to 4.13.8 SCSI I/O Vector block/bio.c bio_add_pc_page memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.8. The affected element is the function bio_add_pc_page of the file block/bio.c of the component SCSI I/O Vector Handler. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2017-12190. The attack requires a local approach. No exploit exists. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.8 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function bio_add_pc_page of the file block/bio.c of the component SCSI I/O Vector Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The bio_map_user_iov and bio_unmap_user functions in block/bio.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13.8 do unbalanced refcounting when a SCSI I/O vector has small consecutive buffers belonging to the same page. The bio_add_pc_page function merges them into one, but the page reference is never dropped. This causes a memory leak and possible system lockup (exploitable against the host OS by a guest OS user, if a SCSI disk is passed through to a virtual machine) due to an out-of-memory condition.

The bug was discovered 08/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 11/22/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-12190 since 08/01/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 85 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104158 (Fedora 26 : kernel (2017-c110ac0eb1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371045 (F5 BIG-IP ASM Multiple Vulnerabilitites (K24578092,K29146534,K51801290,K93472064)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104158) and SecurityFocus (BID 101911†). The entries VDB-97117, VDB-107859, VDB-107862 and VDB-108798 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
