Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.7 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function add_key of the component KEYS Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The KEYS subsystem in the Linux kernel through 4.13.7 mishandles use of add_key for a key that already exists but is uninstantiated, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted system call.
The bug was discovered 10/03/2017. The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-15299 since 10/14/2017.
