Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.3 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file security/keys/encrypted-keys/encrypted.c of the component keyctl Command Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The KEYS subsystem in the Linux kernel before 4.4 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (BUG) via crafted keyctl commands that negatively instantiate a key, related to security/keys/encrypted-keys/encrypted.c, security/keys/trusted.c, and security/keys/user_defined.c.
The weakness was published 02/08/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8539 since 12/10/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88006 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:0168-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197283 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-3798-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88006) and SecurityFocus (BID 94201†). Similar entries are available at VDB-93468, VDB-106281, VDB-107862 and VDB-127743. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
