Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNU C Library 2.26 (Software Library). This affects the function malloc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The malloc function in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.26 could return a memory block that is too small if an attempt is made to allocate an object whose size is close to SIZE_MAX, potentially leading to a subsequent heap overflow. This occurs because the per-thread cache (aka tcache) feature enables a code path that lacks an integer overflow check.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2017. The weakness was presented 12/05/2017 as Bug 22375 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-17426 since 12/05/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106014 (Fedora 27 : glibc (2017-fb5e227432)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197022 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Eglibc, Glibc Vulnerabilities (USN-3534-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
