A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iOS up to 11.1.2 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The bug was discovered 12/02/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/02/2017 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT208334 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-13867 since 08/30/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved memory handling.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105612 (Apple TV < 11.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370677 (Apple macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, Security Update 2017-002 Sierra, and Security Update 2017-005 El Capitan Not Installed).
Upgrading to version 11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (43328), Tenable (105612) and SecurityFocus (BID 102100†).
