A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.13.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component IOAcceleratorFamily. An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. iOS before 11.1 is affected. The issue involves the "Messages" component. It allows physically proximate attackers to view arbitrary photos via a Reply With Message action in the lock-screen state.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2017. The weakness was shared 12/06/2017 by Ian Beer with AIST as HT208331 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-13844 since 08/30/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370677 (Apple macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, Security Update 2017-002 Sierra, and Security Update 2017-005 El Capitan Not Installed).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
