An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. macOS before 10.13.2 is affected. The issue involves the "IOKit" component. It allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context via a crafted app.
The bug was discovered 12/02/2017. The weakness was published 12/06/2017 by Alex Plaskett with MWR InfoSecurity as HT208331 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-13848 since 08/30/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. An input validation issue existed in the kernel. This issue was addressed through improved input validation.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
