A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.3.1 (Virtualization Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Ocaml xenstored Implementation. The manipulation as part of a Reply Message leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (Stored). The Ocaml xenstored implementation (oxenstored) in Xen 4.1.x, 4.2.x, and 4.3.x allows local guest domains to cause a denial of service (domain shutdown) via a large message reply.
The weakness was published 10/29/2013 by Thomas Sanders with Citrix as Xen Security Advisory 72 - ocaml xenstored mishandles oversized message replies as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with Linux Foundation. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4416 since 06/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70831 (Fedora 19 : xen-4.2.3-7.fc19 (2013-20555)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166587 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2013:1876-1)).
Applying the patch xsa72.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seclists.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
