Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 24.0 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 25.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.10 and 24.x before 24.1, Thunderbird before 24.1, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.10, and SeaMonkey before 2.22 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.
The weakness was released 10/29/2013 by Jesse Ruderman, Christoph Diehl, Vladimir Vukicevic, Gary Kwong, Kannan Vijayan and Carsten Book with Mozilla as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-93 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5590 since 08/26/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:
Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70702 (Oracle Linux 6 : thunderbird (ELSA-2013-1480)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121562 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:1476)).
