Unspecified vulnerability in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 25.0, Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.1, Thunderbird before 24.1, and SeaMonkey before 2.22 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2013 by Jesse Ruderman, Christoph Diehl, Vladimir Vukicevic, Gary Kwong, Kannan Vijayan and Carsten Book with Mozilla as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-93 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-5591 since 08/26/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70701 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (81f866ad-41a4-11e3-a4af-0025905a4771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195848 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Thunderbird Vulnerabilities (USN-2010-1)).
Upgrading to version 25.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
