Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 24.0 Image memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 24.0 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing of the component Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The cycle collection (CC) implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 25.0, Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.1, Thunderbird before 24.1, and SeaMonkey before 2.22 does not properly determine the thread for release of an image object, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (race condition and application crash) via a large HTML document containing IMG elements, as demonstrated by the Never-Ending Reddit on reddit.com.

The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2013 by Ezra Pool as Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2013-97 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5596 since 08/26/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70701 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (81f866ad-41a4-11e3-a4af-0025905a4771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195848 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Thunderbird Vulnerabilities (USN-2010-1)).

Upgrading to version 25.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (70701), SecurityFocus (BID 63405†), OSVDB (99088†), Secunia (SA55483†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42129†). Further details are available at mozilla.org. The entries VDB-11047, VDB-11048, VDB-11049 and VDB-11050 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
