Linux Kernel up to 4.14.6 net/ipv4/raw.c raw_sendmsg race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.14.6. It has been declared as critical. The affected element is the function raw_sendmsg of the file net/ipv4/raw.c. Such manipulation leads to race condition. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-17712. Local access is required to approach this attack. No exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.14.6 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function raw_sendmsg of the file net/ipv4/raw.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The raw_sendmsg() function in net/ipv4/raw.c in the Linux kernel through 4.14.6 has a race condition in inet->hdrincl that leads to uninitialized stack pointer usage; this allows a local user to execute code and gain privileges.

The bug was discovered 12/11/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-17712 since 12/15/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105447 (Fedora 26 : kernel (2017-7810b7c59f)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277077 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2017-7810b7c59f)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (105447). The entry VDB-110784 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
