Details
A vulnerability was found in ACTi Camera A1D-500-V6.11.31-AC. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the file /setup/setup_maintain_firmware-default.html. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a hard-coded credentials vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-798. The product contains hard-coded credentials, such as a password or cryptographic key, which it uses for its own inbound authentication, outbound communication to external components, or encryption of internal data. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
ACTi cameras including the D, B, I, and E series using firmware version A1D-500-V6.11.31-AC fail to properly restrict access to the factory reset page. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by directly accessing the http://x.x.x.x/setup/setup_maintain_firmware-default.html page. This will allow an attacker to perform a factory reset on the device, leading to a denial of service condition or the ability to make use of default credentials (CVE-2017-3186).
The bug was discovered 03/07/2017. The weakness was presented 12/16/2017 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-3184 since 12/05/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1110.001 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 283 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:setup/setup_maintain_firmware-default.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11770 (Acti Cameras Multiple Security vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
