A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.10.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function dissect_openwire_type of the component Active MQ. The dissect_openwire_type function in epan/dissectors/packet-openwire.c in the OpenWire dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.11 and 1.10.x before 1.10.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loop) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was disclosed 11/01/2013 by Murali as wnpa-sec-2013-64 · ActiveMQ OpenWire dissector large loop as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6339 since 10/31/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73277 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2014:0342)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350803 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: AL2012-2015-028).
Upgrading to version 1.10.3 or 1.8.11 or higher eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
