Wireshark up to 1.10.2 TCP Dissector packet-tcp.c input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Wireshark up to 1.10.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown function of the file epan/dissectors/packet-tcp.c of the component TCP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

epan/dissectors/packet-tcp.c in the TCP dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.11 and 1.10.x before 1.10.3 does not properly determine the amount of remaining data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was presented 11/01/2013 as wnpa-sec-2013-65 · TCP dissector crash as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6340 since 10/31/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73277 (CentOS 6 : wireshark (CESA-2014:0342)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350398 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2014-330).

Upgrading to version 1.10.3 or 1.8.11 or higher eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (73277), SecurityFocus (BID 63500†), OSVDB (99278†), Secunia (SA55301†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42229†).
