Linux Kernel 3.12 Write syscal ozwpan/ozcdev.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 3.12 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file ozwpan/ozcdev.c of the component Write syscal Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the oz_cdev_write function in drivers/staging/ozwpan/ozcdev.c in the Linux kernel before 3.12 allows local users to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted write operation.

The weakness was disclosed 10/30/2013 by Fabian Yamaguchi and Nico Golde as some unstracked linux kernel security fixes as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4513 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71794 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-quantal vulnerabilities (USN-2068-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195832 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-raring Vulnerabilities (USN-2069-1)).

Applying the patch staging: ozwpan: prevent overflow in oz_cdev_write() is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71794), SecurityFocus (BID 63508†), OSVDB (99325†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42191†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. The entries VDB-11089, VDB-11090, VDB-11093 and VDB-11094 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
