Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.18 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function write_tag_3_packet of the file ecryptfs/keystore.c of the component Length Variables Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 11/04/2013. The weakness was published 11/04/2013 as XADV-2013003 Linux Kernel eCryptfs write_tag_3_packet Heap Buffer Overflow Vulnerability as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by KyongJoo Jung (x90c) and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2602 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
