Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apache Tomcat 5.5.25 (Application Server Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in the Manager application in Apache Tomcat 5.5.25 and earlier allows remote attackers to hijack the authentication of administrators for requests that manipulate application deployment via the POST method, as demonstrated by a /manager/html/undeploy?path= URI. NOTE: the vendor disputes the significance of this report, stating that "the Apache Tomcat Security team has not accepted any reports of CSRF attacks against the Manager application ... as they require a reckless system administrator."
The weakness was presented 11/04/2013 by Ivano Binetti as Apache Tomcat 5.5.25 Cross Site Request Forgery as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at packetstormsecurity.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6357 since 11/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Ivano Binetti and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 218233 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2013-6357), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (29435), Tenable (218233), SecurityFocus (BID 63515†) and OSVDB (99375†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
