Details
A vulnerability was found in Cisco node-jose up to 0.10.x. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component JWS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a key management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-320. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A vulnerability in the Cisco node-jose open source library before 0.11.0 could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to re-sign tokens using a key that is embedded within the token. The vulnerability is due to node-jose following the JSON Web Signature (JWS) standard for JSON Web Tokens (JWTs). This standard specifies that a JSON Web Key (JWK) representing a public key can be embedded within the header of a JWS. This public key is then trusted for verification. An attacker could exploit this by forging valid JWS objects by removing the original signature, adding a new public key to the header, and then signing the object using the (attacker-owned) private key associated with the public key embedded in that JWS header.
The bug was discovered 12/22/2017. The weakness was released 01/04/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-0114 since 11/27/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600.001 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 0.11.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (44324) and SecurityFocus (BID 102445†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
