Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Edge. The affected element is an unknown function of the component Scripting Engine. Executing a manipulation as part of Object can lead to memory corruption. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2018-0775. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Furthermore, an exploit is available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Edge (Web Browser) (version unknown) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component Scripting Engine. The manipulation as part of a Object leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 1709 allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user, due to how the scripting engine handles objects in memory, aka "Scripting Engine Memory Corruption Vulnerability". This CVE ID is unique from CVE-2018-0758, CVE-2018-0762, CVE-2018-0768, CVE-2018-0769, CVE-2018-0770, CVE-2018-0772, CVE-2018-0773, CVE-2018-0774, CVE-2018-0776, CVE-2018-0777, CVE-2018-0778, and CVE-2018-0781.
The bug was discovered 01/03/2018. The weakness was published 01/03/2018 by lokihardt with Google Project Zero as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-0775 since 12/01/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the scripting engine handles objects in memory in Microsoft Edge. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105550 (KB4056892: Windows 10 Version 1709 and Windows Server Version 1709 January 2018 Security Update (Meltdown)(Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91425 (Microsoft Edge Security Update for January 2018 (ADV180002) (Spectre/Meltdown)). The code used by the exploit is:
// Enable the flag using '\n'.repeat(0x1000)
eval(`(function f() {
with ({}) {
(function () {
print(f);
})();
}
}());` + '\n'.repeat(0x1000));
PoC 2:
// ./ch poc.js -ForceDeferParse
(function f() {
with ({}) {
(function () {
print(f);
})();
}
}());Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (43717), Tenable (105550) and SecurityFocus (BID 102400†). Similar entries are available at VDB-111348, VDB-111350, VDB-111360 and VDB-111361. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
