A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9/10/11 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown functionality. The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was shared 11/12/2013 as MS13-088 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3914 since 06/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1337 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70846 (MS13-088: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2888505)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100169 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-088)).
Applying the patch MS13-088 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13325.
