CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.3.1 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function VMLAUNCH/VMRESUME of the component Permission Check Dereferrer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Xen 4.2.x and 4.3.x, when nested virtualization is disabled, does not properly check the emulation paths for (1) VMLAUNCH and (2) VMRESUME, which allows local HVM guest users to cause a denial of service (host crash) via unspecified vectors related to "guest VMX instruction execution."

The weakness was shared 11/08/2013 by Jeff Zimmermann as Xen Security Advisory 75 - Host crash due to guest VMX instruction execution as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4551 since 06/12/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70911 (Fedora 20 : xen-4.3.1-2.fc20 (2013-21000)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166935 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2014:0483-1)).

Applying the patch Xen Security Advisory 75 - Host crash due to guest VMX instruction execution is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seclists.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88649), Tenable (70911), SecurityFocus (BID 63625†), OSVDB (99680†) and Secunia (SA55398†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. The entries VDB-12064, VDB-12235, VDB-12236 and VDB-12339 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
