Linux Foundation libvchan 4.2/4.3.0 XenStore Ring Index input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation libvchan 4.2/4.3.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component XenStore Ring Index Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The (1) do_send and (2) do_recv functions in io.c in libvchan in Xen 4.2.x, 4.3.x, and 4.4-RC series allows local guests to cause a denial of service or possibly gain privileges via crafted xenstore ring indexes, which triggers a "read or write past the end of the ring."

The weakness was published 02/06/2014 by Marek Marczykowski-Gorecki as Xen Security Advisory CVE-2014-1896 / XSA-86 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xenproject.org. The public release has been coordinated with Linux Foundation. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1896 since 02/07/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72539 (Fedora 20 : xen-4.3.1-9.fc20 (2014-2170)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166935 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2014:0483-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch xsa86.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91004), Tenable (72539), SecurityFocus (BID 65424†), Secunia (SA56840†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43679†).
