Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation libvchan 4.2/4.3.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component XenStore Ring Index Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) do_send and (2) do_recv functions in io.c in libvchan in Xen 4.2.x, 4.3.x, and 4.4-RC series allows local guests to cause a denial of service or possibly gain privileges via crafted xenstore ring indexes, which triggers a "read or write past the end of the ring."
The weakness was published 02/06/2014 by Marek Marczykowski-Gorecki as Xen Security Advisory CVE-2014-1896 / XSA-86 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xenproject.org. The public release has been coordinated with Linux Foundation. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1896 since 02/07/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
