A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Google Chrome and Chrome WebRTC 3.42/30.0.1599.101 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is the function VoENetworkImpl::DeRegisterExternalTransport of the file voice_engine/voe_network_impl.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Use-after-free vulnerability in the Channel::SendRTCPPacket function in voice_engine/channel.cc in libjingle in WebRTC, as used in Google Chrome before 31.0.1650.48 and other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors that trigger the absence of certain statistics initialization, leading to the skipping of a required DeRegisterExternalTransport call.
The weakness was published 09/24/2013 by Patrik Höglund with Chromium Development Community as Stable Channel Update as confirmed blog post (Blogspot). The advisory is shared for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.ch. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-6631 since 11/05/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 06/02/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70986 (Debian DSA-2799-1 : chromium-browser - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166539 (OpenSuSE Security Update for chromium (openSUSE-SU-2013:1776-1)).
Upgrading to version 31.0.1650.48 or 3.43 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at chromium.googlesource.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
