A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF 4.0.9 (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function TIFFSetDirectory of the file tif_dir.c of the component tif File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. In LibTIFF 4.0.9, there is an uncontrolled resource consumption in the TIFFSetDirectory function of tif_dir.c. Remote attackers could leverage this vulnerability to cause a denial of service via a crafted tif file. This occurs because the declared number of directory entries is not validated against the actual number of directory entries.
The bug was discovered 01/18/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/19/2018 by Yu Zhou with Ant-financial Light-Year Security Lab (Website). The advisory is available at bugzilla.maptools.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-5784 since 01/19/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108657 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 17.10 : tiff vulnerabilities (USN-3606-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176539 (Debian Security Update for tiff (DSA 4349-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
