This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component DOC Document Handler. The manipulation as part of a Embedded Image leads to a resource management vulnerability. Microsoft Word 2003 SP2 and SP3 on Windows XP SP3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a malformed .doc file containing an embedded image, as demonstrated by word2003forkbomb.doc, related to a "fork bomb" issue.

The weakness was published 11/08/2013 by Absane as Word 2003 SP2 .doc fork bomb on WinXP SP3 as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-6801 since 11/16/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A malformed .doc file with an embedded image causes a fork bomb in Word 2003 SP2 on Windows XP SP3 by comsuming 99% - 100% of the CPU cycles which can only be ended by teminating the process.

A public exploit has been developed by Absane in Word Document and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at noobroot.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110227 (Microsoft Word 2003 ".doc" File Denial of Service Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
