MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.10.7 KDC Request setup_server_realm null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.10.7 (Network Authentication Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function setup_server_realm of the component KDC Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

An unspecified third-party database module for the Key Distribution Center (KDC) in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.10.x allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) via a crafted request, a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-1418.

The weakness was shared 11/04/2013 as Id 7757 (Website). The advisory is shared at krbdev.mit.edu. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-6800 since 11/15/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71487 (GLSA-201312-12 : MIT Kerberos 5: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350283 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for krb5: ALAS-2014-443).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89060), Tenable (71487), SecurityFocus (BID 63770†), OSVDB (99946†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42635†). The entries VDB-11106, VDB-67257, VDB-67306 and VDB-67309 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
