MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.12.1 SPNEGO Acceptor acc_ctx_cont null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This manipulation causes null pointer dereference. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-4344. There is no exploit available. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos (Network Authentication Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function acc_ctx_cont of the component SPNEGO Acceptor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was shared 08/07/2014 as MITKRB5-SA-2014-001 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at web.mit.edu. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4344 since 06/20/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. Responsible for the vulnerability is the following code:

if (REMAIN > INT_MAX)

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77532 (AIX NAS Advisory : nas_advisory1.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350283 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for krb5: ALAS-2014-443).

Upgrading to version 5-1.11.6 or 5-1.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:

if (REMAIN == 0 || REMAIN > INT_MAX)
Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16564.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95210), Tenable (77532), SecurityFocus (BID 69160†), OSVDB (109389†) and Secunia (SA60448†).
