A vulnerability has been found in PowerDNS Recursor up to 4.0.6 (Domain Name Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Web Interface. A cross-site scripting issue has been found in the web interface of PowerDNS Recursor from 4.0.0 up to and including 4.0.6, where the qname of DNS queries was displayed without any escaping, allowing a remote attacker to inject HTML and Javascript code into the web interface, altering the content.
The bug was discovered 11/27/2017. The weakness was presented 01/23/2018 with FortiGuard Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at doc.powerdns.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-15092 since 10/08/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105198 (Fedora 26 : pdns-recursor (2017-1585789772)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277003 (Fedora Security Update for pdns-recursor (FEDORA-2017-81fe39ad9f)).
