A vulnerability was found in PowerDNS Recursor up to 4.0.6 (Domain Name Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown processing of the component DNSSEC Parser. An issue has been found in the DNSSEC parsing code of PowerDNS Recursor from 4.0.0 up to and including 4.0.6 leading to a memory leak when parsing specially crafted DNSSEC ECDSA keys. These keys are only parsed when validation is enabled by setting dnssec to a value other than off or process-no-validate (default).
The bug was discovered 11/27/2017. The weakness was published 01/23/2018 with FortiGuard Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at doc.powerdns.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-15094 since 10/08/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105198 (Fedora 26 : pdns-recursor (2017-1585789772)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
