Linux Kernel 3.7.1 getaxttr System Call fs/nfs/nfs4proc.c _nfs4_get_acl_uncached memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.7.1. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function _nfs4_get_acl_uncached of the file fs/nfs/nfs4proc.c of the component getaxttr System Call. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4591. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 3.7.1 (Operating System). This affects the function _nfs4_get_acl_uncached of the file fs/nfs/nfs4proc.c of the component getaxttr System Call. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the __nfs4_get_acl_uncached function in fs/nfs/nfs4proc.c in the Linux kernel before 3.7.2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a getxattr system call for the system.nfs4_acl extended attribute of a pathname on an NFSv4 filesystem.

The weakness was published 12/11/2012 by Sachin Prabhu with Redhat as Linux kernel: kernel: nfs: missing check for buffer length in __nfs4_get_acl_uncached as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The public release has been coordinated with Linux. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4591 since 06/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71108 (Oracle Linux 6 : Kernel (ELSA-2013-1645)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123695 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2014:0284)).

Upgrading to version 3.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.kernel.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (71108), SecurityFocus (BID 63791†), OSVDB (100003†), Secunia (SA55800†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42329†). Further details are available at seclists.org. Similar entries are available at VDB-11234 and VDB-11508.
