Details
A vulnerability was found in nginx up to 1.5.6 (Web Server) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component URI String. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
nginx 0.8.41 through 1.4.3 and 1.5.x before 1.5.7 allows remote attackers to bypass intended restrictions via an unescaped space character in a URI.
The issue has been introduced in 06/15/2010. The weakness was disclosed 11/19/2013 by Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as [nginx-announce] nginx security advisory as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mailman.nginx.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4547 since 06/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1253 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75218 (openSUSE Security Update : nginx-1.0 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1791-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350777 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for nginx: AL2012-2015-054).
Upgrading to version 1.4.4 or higher or 1.5.7 or higher eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at nginx.org.
