A flaw was found in dovecot 2.0 up to 2.2.33 and 2.3.0. An abort of SASL authentication results in a memory leak in dovecot's auth client used by login processes. The leak has impact in high performance configuration where same login processes are reused and can cause the process to crash due to memory exhaustion.
The bug was discovered 01/25/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/25/2018 by Aleksandar Nikolic with Cisco Talos as Bug 1532768 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-15132 since 10/08/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176313 (Debian Security Update for dovecot (DSA 4130-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
