A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 9.2 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function ql_eioctl of the file dev/qlxgbe/ql_ioctl.c of the component Input Sanitizer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The ql_eioctl function in sys/dev/qlxgbe/ql_ioctl.c in the kernel in FreeBSD 10 and earlier does not validate a certain size parameter, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a crafted ioctl call.
The bug was discovered 11/12/2013. The weakness was disclosed 11/16/2013 by x90c as XADV-2013006 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at x90c.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-6834 since 11/20/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
