Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in EMC RecoverPoint (Backup Software) (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code of the component Boxmgmt CLI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 01/31/2018. The weakness was presented 02/02/2018 by Janjua, Mike Erman, Jack Backer and Alexander Gonzalez as ESA-2018-015 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at emc.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-1184 since 12/06/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13155 (Dell EMC RecoverPoint Multiple Command Injection Vulnerabilities).
