EMC Data Protection Manager Appliance 3.2.4.1/3.5 SSL/TLS Handshake cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in EMC Data Protection Manager Appliance 3.2.4.1/3.5. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component SSL/TLS Handshake Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The TLS protocol, and the SSL protocol 3.0 and possibly earlier, as used in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, mod_ssl in the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.14 and earlier, OpenSSL before 0.9.8l, GnuTLS 2.8.5 and earlier, Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) 3.12.4 and earlier, multiple Cisco products, and other products, does not properly associate renegotiation handshakes with an existing connection, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert data into HTTPS sessions, and possibly other types of sessions protected by TLS or SSL, by sending an unauthenticated request that is processed retroactively by a server in a post-renegotiation context, related to a "plaintext injection" attack, aka the "Project Mogul" issue.

The weakness was shared 11/21/2013 by Martin as ESA-2013-077: RSA Data Protection Manager Appliance Multiple Vulnerabilities as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3555. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by RedTeam Pentesting in ANSI C and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73566 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : ssl_advisory.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19563 (IBM DB2 9.7 Prior to Fix Pack 2 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.2.4.2 or 3.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54158), Exploit-DB (10579), Tenable (73566), SecurityFocus (BID 36935†) and OSVDB (100172†). The entries VDB-4119, VDB-4161, VDB-7826 and VDB-11280 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
