Microsoft Windows TLS/SSL Session TLS/SSL Session Renegotiation cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component TLS/SSL Session Handler. Performing a manipulation as part of TLS/SSL Session Renegotiation results in cryptographic issue. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2009-3555. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additionally, an exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). This affects an unknown part of the component TLS/SSL Session Handler. The manipulation as part of a TLS/SSL Session Renegotiation leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The TLS protocol, and the SSL protocol 3.0 and possibly earlier, as used in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, mod_ssl in the Apache HTTP Server 2.2.14 and earlier, OpenSSL before 0.9.8l, GnuTLS 2.8.5 and earlier, Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) 3.12.4 and earlier, multiple Cisco products, and other products, does not properly associate renegotiation handshakes with an existing connection, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert data into HTTPS sessions, and possibly other types of sessions protected by TLS or SSL, by sending an unauthenticated request that is processed retroactively by a server in a post-renegotiation context, related to a "plaintext injection" attack, aka the "Project Mogul" issue.

The weakness was released 08/10/2010 by Marsh Ray Steve Dispensa with PhoneFactor as MS10-049 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-3555 since 10/05/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73566 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : ssl_advisory.asc), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19563 (IBM DB2 9.7 Prior to Fix Pack 2 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-049 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54158), Exploit-DB (10579), Tenable (73566), SecurityFocus (BID 36935†) and OSVDB (66987†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-4119, VDB-7826, VDB-11279 and VDB-54592. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
