A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows 7/Server 2008/Vista (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The weakness was disclosed 08/10/2010 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as MS10-047 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1888 since 05/11/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy in ANSI C and been published 1 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48284 (MS10-047: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (981852)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-047 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
