Microsoft Windows 7/Server 2008/Vista Kernel race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows 7/Server 2008/Vista (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Race condition in the kernel in Microsoft Windows XP SP3 allows local users to gain privileges via vectors involving thread creation, aka "Windows Kernel Data Initialization Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 08/10/2010 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Google Security Team as MS10-047 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1888 since 05/11/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy in ANSI C and been published 1 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48284 (MS10-047: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (981852)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90619 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS10-047)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-047 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
